How do you break free when your phone starts owning your attention?
Watch the episode: YouTube — How Do You Break Free from Phone Addiction?
For a lot of people the problem is not that a phone is evil. The problem is that the screen slowly takes the place of presence — with God, with family, and with the people right in front of you.
That is the conversation on RIOT Podcast — Real Issues. One Truth. — Episode 234. Pastor Pete, Pastor Bill, and Bob talk about breaking free from phone addiction. Watch the episode on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icLlNcnPzbU) or on Rumble (https://rumble.com/user/RiotPodcast).
When the screen owns your attention
Phone addiction rarely starts with a dramatic decision. It starts with small habits: checking one more time, scrolling when you feel lonely, reaching for the phone before prayer, before conversation, before rest.
Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). What we reach for first often reveals what we trust most. If the phone is the first and last thing in the day, it is already shaping the heart.
Distraction is a discipleship issue
Discipleship is not only what we believe. It is what we practice. Paul wrote, “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any” (1 Corinthians 6:12).
A tool that helps you work, connect, and learn can still become a master. Freedom in Christ includes the freedom to put the phone down.
Practical steps that match a changed heart
Breaking free is not only willpower. It is repentance and replacement — turning from distraction and turning toward presence with God and people.
- Put the phone out of reach during prayer and Bible reading.
- Set no-phone windows at meals and before bed.
- Replace scroll time with Scripture, a walk, or a real conversation.
- Ask a trusted friend to check in when the habit creeps back.
David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart… and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23–24). Ask God to show you where the screen has crowded Him out.
Real freedom is found in Christ
Tech boundaries help, but the deeper answer is a better Master. Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Rest does not come from another app. It comes from Him.
If your phone has been stealing peace, attention, or intimacy with God, Episode 234 is a place to start the conversation with honesty and hope.
